Oxygen Pitting

One of the most serious aspects of oxygen corrosion is that it occurs as pitting. This type of corrosion can produce failures even though only a relatively small amount of metal has been lost and the overall corrosion rate is relatively low. The degree of pitting depends on the concentration of dissolved oxygen, the pH and the temperature of the water.

Oxygen pitting occurs in boiler tubes, and turbine blades. It is also the reason for failure of steam lines, and fittings etc. as well as the root cause of unscheduled shut downs. Corrosion

Corrosion is a significant problem caused by water in boilers. Corrosion can be of widely varying origin and nature due to the action of dissolved oxygen. Corrosion may occur in the feed-water system as a result of low pH water and the presence of dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide. Corrosion leads to boiler piping becoming weak and leading to leakage problems.

Scaling

Scaling occurs due to impurities being precipitated out of the water directly on heat transfer surfaces or due to suspended matter in water. Evaporation in a boiler causes impurities to concentrate. Common feed water contaminants that can form boiler deposits include Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Aluminum and Silica. Scale is formed by salts that have limited solubility but are not totally insoluble in boiler water. These salts reach the deposit site in a soluble form and precipitate.

Scaling leads to loss of heat transfer efficiency and often, acts as an insulator. In the long run, it can lead to severe problems such as rupturing of tubes and aiding of corrosion. In general, boiler deposits can cut operating efficiency, damage equipment, lead to unscheduled boiler outages and increased cleaning expenses. Scaling can also impact fuel consumption and power cost of steam generation.

Foaming

Foaming is a condition that occurs in boilers when there are high concentrations of soluble salts, suspended solids or organic matter. These create foam in the steam space of boiler that adversely impacts the quality of steam produced.
De-foaming and anti-foaming chemical treatments are used selectively to treat this problem.

Sludge

During the operation of a steam boiler small quantities of hardness salts are introduced, together with traces of suspended matter into the feed-water. Over time the concentrations of these salts and suspended matter build up, in the form of a 'sludge', and if not treated properly can settle on to heat transfer surfaces, eventually 'baking' on to form a hard crystalline scale.

 COOLING WATER TREATMENT

Cooling Towers drive away heat from re-circulating water that is passed through chillers, air-conditioning equipment, or other process equipment. Proper treatment of the water that circulates through the tower is critical in determining the heat transfer efficiency and increased life of the cooling tower and associated process equipment.

Corrosion

Microbiological fouling can cause the entire PVC or HDPE fins to be replaced completely.

Normally, oxidizing base and non-oxidizing base biocides are widely used for disinfection application. Scaling

Hard water in the system produces scaling which is primarily caused by calcium and magnesium salts. The other type of scaling occurs as a result of silicates in the water. Make up water further increases scaling tendency. Scaling directly impacts the heat transfer efficiency of the entire system. This further loads the system with additional power requirement of up to 10-15%.

Scaling

 EFFLUENT TREATMENT

Effluent is the wastewater released by businesses and industries in a community. In effluent percent water, with only 0.06 percent of the wastewater dissolved
and suspended solid material. The cloudiness of sewage is caused by suspended particles which in untreated sewage range from 100 to 350 mg/l. Sewage also contains nutrients (such as ammonia and phosphorus), minerals, and metals. Ammonia can range from 12 to 50 mg/l and phosphorus can range from 6 to 20 mg/l in untreated sewage.

Microbiological Fouling

In many cases, RO systems get contaminated with micro-organisms like various types of pathogens due to improper disinfection of raw water. It is very difficult to eliminate microbiological contamination from RO systems. Microbial Fouling causes reduced permeate flow and poorer permeate water quality. Timely and correct treatment can control and eliminate microbiological problems and the need to replace RO membranes.
In pre-treatment, disinfection of raw water is very important. Normally, chlorine base or ozone base oxidizing treatments are widely used for disinfection. However, it is very important that before passing the water into RO system, it must be free from any oxidizing matter.

Oxidation
